Saint Patrick’s Day History Fun Facts

Saint Patrick was born in Roman Britain. Irish pirates captured him and brought him to the Emerald Island. He initially worked as a shepherd. He became a devout Christian. Patrick escaped to England but returned to Ireland to spread Christianity.

Saint Patrick died on March 17, 461 A.D. That’s why we celebrate him on March 17 each year.

Shamrocks, the 3-petal flower is the national flower of Ireland. Real shamrocks and graphic depictions can be seen readily at any Saint Patrick’s Day celebration. The word “shamrock” means little clover. Some think that St. Patrick used it to explain the Holy Trinity.

Beer is the drink of choice for many adults on the celebration day. The Irish beer, Guinness, is a particular favorite.

The New York City Parade celebrating St Patrick’s Day is the largest in the world. But, the first St. Patrick’s Day parade in the U.S. was in Boston in 1737.

Traditional St. Patrick Day grub includes corned beef and cabbage. Soda bread is frequently included. Shepherd’s Pie is another option. It includes mashed potato topping with a sprinkling of cheese over a meaty base.  Plus, you can never go wrong with serving an Irishman (or woman) potatoes. Colcannon is similar to mashed potatoes. Others opt for Irish stew. And, of course for those of drinking age, a good Guinness Stout to wash it down with.

People used to wear blue clothes on St Patrick’s Day. But, because of Ireland’s association with the color green because of the Emerald Island and Shamrocks, the preferred color shifted to green.
